London, UK | Lockes | Shed
Following the success of the original Lockes Covent Garden, we were commissioned to develop a second venue for Lockes Clapham, adapting the cocktail and pizza bar concept for a more neighbourhood-focused setting. While the Covent Garden location catered primarily to after-work drinks and evening dining, the Clapham venue was designed to serve as a welcoming social hub for local residents, families, and groups of friends throughout the day.
Building on the character and identity of the original site, the design retains the rich material palette and bold colours inspired by contemporary New York bar culture. For this location, however, the atmosphere was softened with warmer tones and a more relaxed spatial composition, creating a setting that feels approachable and comfortable for longer visits and a broader demographic.
At the centre of the layout sits a diagonal bar that cuts across the space, acting as both the functional and visual focal point of the interior. This arrangement maximises the bar length to allow for multiple service points while also resolving an otherwise awkward corner of the room. The resulting back-bar display forms a striking illuminated bottle wall, visible from multiple points within the venue and reinforcing the bar as the heart of the space.
To maintain continuity with the Covent Garden venue, several signature design elements were carried across, including the use of a picture rail displaying layered artwork that adds texture and personality to the interior. These moments introduce bursts of colour and visual interest, reinforcing the playful identity of the brand while giving the Clapham site its own distinct character.
I played a leading role in delivering the project, gaining valuable experience in coordinating between the client, design team, and contractors throughout the process. From concept through to implementation, clear communication and collaboration were essential to navigating challenges and adapting the design as the project evolved.
